What is SAAS?

SAAS is an acronym meaning, Software as a Service.  Imagine opening an internet browser like, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome or Safari and visiting a web site.  Upon arriving at the web site you are greeted with a simple username and password log-in.  After logging in, all the important software you use appears before your eyes without a need to load a single program beyond your web browser.

That is exactly what SAAS offers.  You log-in and now your word processor, spreadsheets, presentations, emails, calendars and so much more are available online.  You can access your programs and documents not only from your computer but any computer in the world.

Why companies and individuals choose SAAS?

Adopting SAAS is easier and makes more sense today.  Companies are gaining confidence in the world of SAAS because it offers:

  • Higher degrees of security
  • Simple means of backing-up mission critical data
  • Wider access to data without the need for VPN
  • Powerful collaboration tools
  • Reduces overall IT costs
  • World class applications
  • More productivity quicker
  • Robust user interfaces making the learning process simple
  • Increases sales through better tracking of customer relationships

The cliche', "The wave of the future", is often overused to create awe over an idea or product.  However, SAAS truly is the direction software companies are moving their development.  It makes sense because companies like Google, Microsoft, and Zoho are able to bring product to market quickly and efficiently.  In addition, they are able to offer a low cost point-of-entry and in some cases it is free for users to utilize.
